Bay of Islands Highlights with Glowworm Caves
See the best parts of the Bay of Islands - including the Kawiti Caves!
Our most popular Bay of Islands tour. Visit the Kawiti Glow Worm caves, famous Hundertwasser toilets, historic Kerikeri to see the Stone Store and Kemp House plus the Makana chocolate factory.
Departing from your tender wharf, our first destination is the Kawiti Glowworm Caves where a local Maori guide will lead you through underground caverns to see the glowworms and tell you how the caves came to be found.
See amazing cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, and of course the highlight being the thousands of star-like 'lights' covering the cave ceiling. These clever bugs use their lights to attract insects to fly into their 'fishing lines' - an impressive sight not to be missed.
After the cave tour it is a short drive to Kawakawa, location of the world famous "Hundertwasser Toilets" one of the few public toilets seen as an international work of art, designed by the expatriate Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Next we travel to the areas largest town - Kerikeri - for the afternoon. After a stop for lunch (your cost) we visit the Makana Chocolate factory to sample their hand made chocolates and time to visit the adjacent wood crafts shop and exhibition.
Passing through Kerikeri, we travel to Kerikeri Inlet - the location of the original Mission Station which was established here in 1819. There are two significant buildings - "The Stone Store" (1832), originally used as a warehouse and the adjacent "Kemp House", New Zealand's oldest building (1821/22) constructed by missionary carpenters and Maori sawyers. Kemp House has changed little over time, despite bearing witness to many historically significant events.
Our last stop is at the Haruru Falls, a breathtaking waterfall, its name meaning "Big Noise".
Note on some dates we may use larger 22 seat mini-coaches and also change the order of the itinerary.
After a great day out we will guarantee you are back at the port in plenty of time to board your ship, taking with you lots of wonderful memories from your tour with us into New Zealand's heartland!
