Dunedin City Sights & Larnach Castle tour
See the best that the 'Edinburgh of the South' has to offer!
Make the most of your visit on our Highlights small group personal tour. You will see and learn plenty about Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula with our local guide - including Larnach Castle, a real highlight of the region.
Departing Port Chalmers for Dunedin City we travel alongside the harbour with great views across to the Otago Peninsula. Our first stop is at New Zealand's oldest university - Otago - opened in July 1871 with a staff of just three professors. It is now a major centre of learning with over 20,000 students from over 100 nations.
Any tour of Dunedin has to include a visit to the iconic Railway Station, with time to look around this architectural gem of a building and perhaps watch the Taieri Gorge train depart.
Then to The Octagon, the heart of Dunedin, time here for photos and a quick coffee stop if you wish (own cost).
Leaving the city centre, it's out to the Otago Peninsula along the Peninsula High Road. We will have stunning views over the harbour and city far below.
Next is the highlight of the trip - historical Larnach Castle. Sitting at the peak of the Peninsula you will see amazing views from the impressive gardens and grounds (which are a garden of International Significance). Entry to the castle is included and you can self guide through this fabulous homestead - built by William Larnach for his family in 1871. Learn about the scandal and tragedy that befell the family and climb the spiral stairs for views from the tower. The Ballroom Cafe is our lunch venue (at your cost) and we have reserved tables for our group.
Leaving the Castle, we wind our way back down to the harbours edge for the return to the city, always keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way.
The afternoon allows us time to explore more of Dunedin's sights, such as St Clair Beach (where the pounding ocean creates a great surfing break), or Signal Hill lookout (for panoramic views over the area).
Before heading back to the ship, a must see item is "Baldwin Street" - the steepest in the world. Feeling fit? Then see how far up you can walk! A great photo stop as well.
Please note that the order of the tour may vary depending on the weather conditions, ships arrival times and traffic issues. On rare days we may run this tour on 24 seat coaches due to demand.
After a great day out we will guarantee you are back at the port in plenty of time to board your ship, taking with you lots of wonderful memories from your tour with us into New Zealand's heartland!
